Exhibition “Kosiv Bazaar. A Living Archive of the Carpathians.”

There is a place in the west of Ukraine, in the Carpathian Mountains, where magic happens. Known as the Kosiv Bazaar, it is here that the imagination is sparked, creativity flows, and the world meets.

The Kosiv Bazaar is a unique cultural phenomenon, a true theatre for visitors and an essential part of everyday life for the Hutsul people. It is where tradition, craft, art, and daily life intertwine. At the bazaar, one can find folk crafts, artworks, antiques, and contemporary goods: clothing, furniture, tools, livestock, and even transportation.

All of this exists in a colourful, vibrant, and seemingly chaotic yet harmonious environment. It is a place of encounters and conversations, where local dishes and homemade moonshine are shared, and, most importantly, news, stories, and rumours are exchanged. People come not only to shop, but to see and be seen.

This exhibition showcases a portion of the vast collection assembled by Leonard Krawchuk over many years. It represents Hutsulshchyna and the neighbouring regions of Pokuttia and Bukovyna.

Є місце на заході України, в Карпатах, де витає магія. Відоме як Косівський базар, саме тут розгортається уява, пульсує творчість і світ сходиться в одне ціле.

Косівський базар — унікальне явище, справжній театр для туриста та невід’ємна частина життя гуцула. Тут переплітаються традиція, мистецтво й побут. На базарі продають вироби народних ремесел, твори мистецтва, старожитності й сучасні речі — одяг, меблі, господарське приладдя, тварин і навіть транспорт. Yсе це творить живу, барвисту й хаотичну, але гармонійну картину.

Це місце зустрічей, розмов, частування місцевими стравами, самогонкою, обміну новинами, історіями та плітками. Люди приходять сюди не лише купувати, а й щоб «себе показати» і подивитися на інших.

Виставка представляє частину великої колекції, яку роками збирав Леонард Кравчук. Вона охоплює Гуцульщину та частково сусідні регіони — Покуття й Буковину.

Leonard Krawchuk is a leading collector of Ukrainian folk art. This exhibition showcases only a portion of the vast collection assembled by Leonard Krawchuk over many years and donated to the UMC Ontario Branch.

Леонард Кравчук – провідний збирач українського народного мистецтва. На цій виставці представлена лише частина великої колекції, зібраної Леонардом Кравчуком протягом багатьох років і подарованої філії UMC в Онтаріо.

Artistic woodwork stands among the oldest forms of Hutsul art, with roots reaching back to the 16th century. Masters created carved, inlaid, and pyrography-decorated utilitarian and decorative objects. The exhibition primarily features works by contemporary artists executed in classical techniques. Each piece is distinguished by craftsmanship, aesthetics, and a deep connection to the traditions of the Hutsul school of woodworking.

Kosiv painted ceramics, a vibrant expression of Hutsul folk art dating back to the 16th–17th centuries, is characterized by a green, yellow, and brown palette on a white ground, featuring geometric, floral, and narrative motifs. In 2019, Kosiv painted ceramics was inscribed on the UNESCO intangible heritage list. This exhibition presents works by classic and contemporary masters, including P. Tsvilyk, N. Verbivs’ka, V. Shvets’, and others.

Косівська кераміка — яскрава форма гуцульського народного мистецтва, відома ще з XVI–XVII століть. Вона вирізняється зеленою, жовтою та коричневою палітрою на білому фоні. В орнаментиці поєднуються геометричні та рослинні мотиви, а також сюжетні сцени з повсякденного життя. У 2019 році Косівську мальовану кераміку внесли до списку спадщини ЮНЕСКО. Експозиція презентує твори класиків та сучасних майстрів, серед яких П. Цвілик, Н. Вербівська, В. Швець та інші. Кількість

Hutsul Metalwork / Мосяжництво Гуцульщини.

Metalwork is a traditional folk art of working with copper, brass, bronze, and silver that developed in the late 18th to early 19th century. It was often combined with leather. Masters cast, chased, engraved, and inlaid metal to create knives, buckles, staffs, rings, seals, jewelry, and bags. Each piece reflects both the skill and beauty of Hutsul tradition. Today, few such masters remain.

Мосяжництво — традиційне народне мистецтво обробки міді, латуні, бронзи та срібла, що розвинулося наприкінці XVIII – на початку XIX століття. Часто воно поєднувалося зі шкірою. Майстри відливали, карбували, гравіювали й інкрустували метал, створюючи ножі, пряжки, палиці, персні, печатки, прикраси та сумки. Кожен виріб поєднує майстерність і красу гуцульської традиції. Сьогодні таких майстрів залишилося небагато.
