Everything old... is still cool! 😎

In 2019, we took visitors on a stylish trip back to 1960s and 1970s diaspora life in Canada! Our exhibition, Everything Old is Cool Again: Groovy Vintage Fashion from the Ukrainian Diaspora (September 20, 2019, to May 2, 2020), showcased how Ukrainian-Canadians brought traditional embroidery, or vyshyvanky, into everyday fashion, adding flair to everything from casual dress to special occasions. The exhibit featured over 40 pieces from our contemporary collection, along with items on loan from our very cool members. With a groovy living space to hang out in, our visitors experienced a trip down memory lane, all set in a funky, folky atmosphere of embroidered beauty.

Since the russian invasion of Ukraine three years ago, Ukrainian folk fashion continues to be a vibrant symbol of national pride, resistance, and cultural identity. Vyshyvanky have found their way into modern fashion, both on the streets and on international runways, blending heritage with contemporary flair. Rushnyky and embroidered linens are being upcycled into trendy styles, and wooden or ceramic treasures from Baba's house seamlessly integrate with modern decor as a nod to our heritage and ancestors.

Today, wearing a Shevchenko embroidery on a jean jacket, loading up a sofa with embroidered pillows, or creating a niche in a home showcasing Ukrainian ceramics are just a few ways decorators and designers are paying homage to the handiwork of past generations of Ukrainian artisans.

The Ukrainian Museum of Canada – Ontario Branch has become an exciting source for vintage clothing, embroidery, and all things Ukrainian! You can support our Museum with donations of embroidered textiles, ceramics, wooden items, and pysanky to be resold as Baba's Treasures. Help us find a new home for Ukrainian treasures and continue to celebrate our rich heritage. Your contributions keep our culture alive for future generations to appreciate and enjoy, and 100% of the sale of items supports our Museum. 

We accept:

  • Embroidery (part or complete)

  • Ceramics

  • Embroidered Clothing

  • Wooden items

  • Pysanky (hollow or wooden)

This exhibition honours the Museum's founders and their ongoing contributions over eight decades. It showcases treasured and rarely displayed artifacts, telling the story of our donors, collection, and diaspora while highlighting the Museum's rich history.
 

Three Years: Ukraine Illustrated

St. Volodymyr Institute and the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch present an exhibition featuring eleven artworks from Ukraine Illustrated.

On view in the Art Exhibit and Meeting Room at SVI through the month of March.
